OVERVIEW OF FELLOWSHIP

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Mayo Clinic Arizona is offering a two-year fellowship for international candidates under the mentorship of Dr. Devyani Lal, Dr. Michael J. Marino, and Dr. Amar Miglani. This two-year fellowship has been formulated to offer training in comprehensive treatment of inflammatory sinonasal conditions, anterior skull base surgery, orbital pathology, functional nasal surgery, epistaxis, and allergy. Our aim is to prepare graduates for academic careers internationally. 

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION

Weekly Schedule:

On average, fellows will spend 1-2 days in clinic, 2-3 days in the OR, and have one day of protected research time. Educational sessions including interdisciplinary conferences, journal clubs, and case review sessions will be held weekly.

Research Responsibilities:

There are a broad range of opportunities available to the fellow including clinical, basic science, and translational research. Fellows will engage in regular divisional research meetings and are expected to present research at two national/regional meetings and published at least two manuscripts per year. There is robust support through Mayo Clinic intramural funding mechanisms. Additionally, felows will supervise medical students and residents interested in research projects within the division.

Diversity of Cases:

Fellows will receive comprehensive training in medical and surgical management of rhinologic conditions including the following:

  • Basic and complex reivision endoscopic sinus surgery
  • Extended endoscopic sinus surgery procedures (e.g. Draf 2a, Draf 3, sphenoid sinus drill out)
  • Endoscopic endonasal orbital surgery (e.g. tumors and decompression)
  • Lacrimal surgery (e.g. DCR)
  • Endoscopic transphenoidal approaches to the sella and parasellar regions
  • Endoscopic anterior skull base resection
  • Open approaches to sinonasal tumors
  • Endoscopic transclival and craniovertebral junction approaches
  • Functional nasal surgery including caudal end management, nasal septal perforation repair, and lateral nasal wall reconstruction

Call Schedule:

No regular call for fellows

Additional Information:

The fellowship offers salary and benefits commensurate with PGY 6 and PGY 7 levels for year 1 and year 2 of training, respectively. 

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT

ECFMG requirements (includes passing USMLE and TOEFL) and ability to obtain a J1 VISA.
